Zulum Denies Ordering Arrests, Prioritizes Borno Rebuilding - zulum denies arrests
Borno State Governor Zulum spoke on October 2 denying arrests of ‘Tinubu Must Go’ supporters.

Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has denied ordering the arrest of individuals wearing Tinubu Must Go T-shirts in Maiduguri, stating he has never directed security agencies to detain opposition supporters or critics. Speaking on Friday, October 2, Zulum said he became aware of the incident only that morning and expressed surprise at attempts to associate his government with the arrests.

Controversy Over Arrests

The arrests and subsequent prosecution of five men linked to the political slogan sparked criticism from human rights organizations. Amnesty International has called for their release, alleging the authorities are criminalizing peaceful dissent. The governor, however, emphasized his focus remains on rebuilding communities ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency and restoring peace in the state.

Zulum asserted that he has consistently protected residents, including members of opposition parties, from harm. He questioned why he would order arrests on political grounds, noting he is not contesting any office in the 2027 elections. According to him, Borno has been an All Progressives Congress state since the party gained power there, and his priority is improving residents’ lives and restoring the state.

Police Explanation

The Borno State Police Command provided a different account, stating the five men were arrested for alleged possession of suspected illicit substances and conduct capable of causing public disturbance, not due to their political views. Amnesty International has challenged this explanation, maintaining its demand for the men’s release. The allegations against the defendants remain matters for judicial determination.

Zulum accused some political actors of making false allegations against leaders as elections approach to attract attention. He referenced his administration’s efforts in resettling internally displaced persons, reconstructing destroyed communities, and establishing schools and hospitals. Zulum credited the progress in Borno to the dedication of his team, directed toward helping the state recover from years of conflict.

Political Context

The governor stated that some critics who once praised his work have recently turned negative ahead of the 2027 elections. He emphasized that his reward for sacrifices and resources committed to rebuilding Borno would come from God, and criticism would not deter him from serving the state until his tenure ends. Zulum maintained that only “desperate politicians” would order the arrest of opposition supporters, insisting he does not belong to that category.
